Kiper, McShay on running backs

  1. McCluster was 3rd on Kiper's board adn 5th on McShay's board and there's still no mention of him?
No talk about Toby Gerhart either? That's frustrating. ESPN analysis needs less flash and more analysis.

  2. I'm disappointed that McShay has Matthews #2. Matthews is unexceptional in every way. I think you'd have to be crazy to put him ahead of Best. Maybe I'm just an idiot who doesn't know what I'm talking about, but are probably a half dozen RBs in this draft that show me at least glimpses of potential future stardom, and Matthews ain't one of them.

From that little blurb, Anthony Dixon looks intriguing. Once I'm done previewing the big names, I really look forward to breaking down the later round RBs, since the Hawks will almost certainly draft one, and possibly even two of them.

  3. Still wondering where the Ryan Matthews' love fest has come from. Totally agree that the guy is a nice RB with zero skills that stand out as anything more than average for a #2 RB in the NFL. I'm hoping for Joe McKnight, Legarrette Blount or Anthony Dixon. I really think McKnight and Blount are guys bound to have better pro careers than college because McKnight was underutilized at USC (committee approach) and Blount's abilities did not mesh well with Oregon's offense (even though he put up impressive numbers).

I can't wait to see the WR breakdown where they put Golden Tate at #2. A guy who I would bet my life at the combine is 5'10" sub 200 and doesn't break a 4.5 40. Not basing things strictly off the combine, but there are certain physical qualities needed to be successful in the NFL, and I don't see Tate being anything better than a decent #2 WR who will probably only have some success if put on a team with an elite QB. Not hating on the guy, but I'd be unbelievably pissed if we drafted him at #40 over Damian Williams or Aurrellious Benn or Demariyus Thomas.

  4. Completely agree annonymous.

I did a write up on Matthews earlier in the season and I just saw nothing spectacular. He also got banged up in the game and was permanently in and out. Just totally unspectacular and the type of back you can get for cheaper later on. I don't see a first round pick.

It's a lousy year for running backs overall - not much in terms of top end talent and not great depth either. I'd have Spiller and Best as my 1&2 with probably McKnight at #3. There are guys later on (McShay touches on Mario Hardesty) that could come in and contribute though, but unless you're going to make the big splash on a Spiller or take best in that #40 range (concussions worry me) I think you're better off waiting till later and hoping Alex Gibbs can work his magic. I wouldn't touch Matthews or Dwyer with the first three picks.

  5. Anyone else think Hardesty looks like a stud? Good moves and build, decent speed, and can catch the ball. Hits the hole like a ZBS RB, but has the quickness to break it outside. Not to mention the sexiest spin move on Earth. He and Blount are really the only guys that I hope the hawks come away with. In my eyes Spiller/Best/Dwyer don't bring enough value/security at where they're going to be taken, and the Gerhart/Matthews/Dixon group just doesn't impress me at all.

  6. Speaking of RBs what would you think Rob of trading the 14th pick to the Chargers for their first round pick and Cromartie now that they are looking to trade him for a RB or a draft pick to select a RB?

  7. It'd be nice to stay in round one and get Cromartie, but I think that's a bit ambitious. You might be able to get him for the #40. I like Cromartie because he takes chances. Others won't like that. If the Seahawks were a better team and not in a big rebuild, then I'd really consider that move.

  8. I love Demariyus Thomas, I'll admit it. he is a beast.I think he could be incredible in the NFL. He looks like the next marques colston. Wouldn't it make more sense for the hawks to take the best OL at 14, the Thomas at 40? Then you get a better OL prospect than brown and quite possibly a better WR prospect than Bryant as well.

  9. Too bad Demariyus Thomas broke his foot last night, he'll for sure miss the combine but should be ready for OTA workouts.
