Offensive lineman measurements

By Rob Staton
The second day of combine activity is taking place in Indianapolis for the offensive lineman, tight ends and place kickers. To see a full schedule for each group, click here. The second group (Quarterbacks, running backs and receivers) have arrived and will be measured tomorrow. Work out drills take place on day four for each group, meaning we'll see the lineman and tight ends participate on Saturday.

There were clearly some big story lines out there today, none more so the news that Charles Brown weighed in at 303lbs. It was imperative that he USC offensive tackle arrived in combine having added bulk to his 6'5" frame. He's achieved that and if he performs well in drills, there's no reason why his stock won't rise dramatically. Remember, another former converted tight end ended up going second overall last year after a good performance in Indianapolis (Jason Smith). It's unlikely Brown will boost his stock to that extent, but he could certainly secure a top 20 selection. For more on Brown, check out Kip's POTD article below and my earlier article.

Rob, Did Jared Veldheer weigh and measure in? What were his stats?

Jared Veldheer:

Height: 6'8"
Weight: 312 lbs
Arm length: 33 in.
Hand size: 10 in.
College: Hillsdale

As with Bulaga, arm length is a bit of a concern. Not many NFL starters have 33 inch arms. Leverage could also be an issue at 6'8".

Wow, Charlie Brown has some big mits. The the arm length and weight are encouraging too. Seems like he could be a realistic pick at #14 now.

Brown's measurables are impressive. He could shoot up the board like Jason Smith. I was high on Smith, but Brown could be a better prospect.

Smith: 33 3/4" arms and 9 3/4" hands
Brown: 35 1/4" arms and 11 3/8" hands

Smith also worked out of a 2 point stance at Baylor; Brown doesn't.

Smith also had a bit of an injury history with a MCL sprain in the season opener his junior year (missed 3 games). Returned an reinjured the same knee the follwing week (missing another 2 games). Brown has no injury history that I'm aware of.

I'm really pulling for Brown at 14.

Brown fits the Gibbs ZBS perfectly. It wouldn't be a strtch to consider him at #14.

These are some big men. Based on what I have heard and these measurables, I'll bet that Campbell and Charles Brown Fly up the charts. Washington is looking for a LT as well and Detroit also could use one. I hope we get the chance at the right guy. Do not trust Baluga or Trent Williams very much as a LT prospect.

Bulaga and Trent Williams likely restricted themselves to the right side of the line in most team's mind. If you're already facing concerns about being able to protect as a LT, and then you show up with only decently-long arms (as opposed to the mutants teams put on their left side), you have an uphill climb to make teams think you're a LT. I'm not saying that's right, but that's what I'd expect.

No injury history is a big plus.

He's also got no reported issues when it comes to attitude, work ethic and drive. He needed to gain the weight for the combine and he achieved it. It shows he's serious about the NFL, he didn't rest on a likely late first/early second grade even at the 290lbs range. The challenge now is to perform well in drills. He could be a dramatic riser - expect a lot of mocks to suddenly have Brown as a high first rounder.

what about davis and brown for both first round picks so we could have a better ground and pass game?

Rob Staton said...

I don't think that'd be necessary. I think if you spend that #6 pick on Davis, you look to improve another area of the team at #14. Taking two rookie tackles doesn't make you automatically a much better offense (ask Jacksonville). You still need playmakers to keep a defense honest, you still need a pass rush on the other side of the ball. Taking Davis at #6 would mean, for me, looking at another area and maybe returning to draft o-lineman later on.

I think now we have to worry about Brown getting by SF at #13,another zone team.

Rob Staton said...

I think SF will entertain the prospect of taking someone who better suits the right hand side - Williams or Bulaga.

Hope your right Rob. If it was me, I would take Brown, good LT's are hard to find.
