Dez Bryant & Bench press figures

By Rob Staton
News is fitering through that Dez Bryant won't work out at the combine. That's worrying - a guy who's not played since week two of the college season and no reported injury issues (it's now being claimed a 'tweaked hamstring' is the reason he won't work out). It was very important for Bryant to work out in Indianapolis. Michael Crabtree was a top ten pick despite missing the combine, but he'd just completed a second successive Biletnikoff award winning season.

Some of the numbers from the standard 225lbs bench press are also leaking out for the offensive lineman. Bruce Campbell, unsurprisingly, benched impressively - raising the bar 34 times. Just compare it to some of the other prospects - Anthony Davis managed 21 attempts, Bryan Bulaga 26, Charles Brown 21 and Mike Iupati 27. Everyone expected Campbell to wow scouts in Indianapolis - he's been described as an offensive lineman version of Vernon Davis. The Maryland prospect has injury history - it will scare some teams off. Others will be watching his performance this week and putting him a lot higher on their draft boards. The only prospect I know who benched more was Russell Okung - who managed a beastly 38 attempts. I'm not Okung's biggest fan (I think he deserves a mid/late first round grade) but that's impressive power.

Hey Rob,

Just wondering if you have any sources how bench numbers compare to those good O-line in the past history. I feel like leverage is more important, but what do I know. Just curious. Thanks!

Hi Taylor, I'll look into it. Leverage absolutely is more important, as is a nice initial punch. Charles Brown has a great punch off the line, but benched 13 fewer times than Bruce Campbell. Power is one thing, using it to your advantage is another.

If Bryant doens't work out at the combine there goes my wish of getting McCoy. Word was that TB was considering him with the 3rd pick but sans combine numbers I can't imagine that happening now. Can't see us picking him either.

I would say it depends on his proday. I think it could be a definite chance now that he falls to at least #14, and after watching us pass on Crabtree last year and his late season success, we have to consider it. Also is would be interesting to see if Benn is able to become the number one receiver in this class. He's only an inch shorter. I thought he would way in heavier that Bryant but he didn't. I am not sure if that's good or bad.

Okung had almost twice as many reps as Davis. That's just... silly. (as an aside, 21 seems very disappointing for Davis and I think underlines his work ethic questions)

That's good news for both Okung and Seahawks fans that don't want him. It helps his chances of being taken in the top 5 picks.

It's impressive power by Okung, but it does nothing for his stock in my opinion. The tape shows a real lack of dominance. I can't see how he goes in the top five, I also can't see him in Seattle.

Chris Spencer if i remember correctly was a beast at weight lifting. not sure thats made him a better blocker.

A little disapointed in 21 reps for Davis and Brown, but it won't affect their stock that much. Oher had 21 reps last year and he turned out well.

2009 Bench Press:

Jason Smith 33
Eugene Monroe 23
Eben Britton 24
Andre Smith 19
Phil Loadholt 24
Michael Oher 21
William Beatty 27

If you bench over 20, it's acceptable. Guys with longer arms struggle to bench as much - that's something they can't help. Really, being able to bench 30 instead of 20 means nothing to me. I'll take tape over those stats any day.

Rob,
I know it's not everything... But did you see Bruce Campbell's arm length! Over 36 inches, it's got to be hard to throw that much weight up that far that many times.

Campbell is an athletic beast.

how about mitch petrus???

Rumor has it that in the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter in a game this fall Okung made a game saving 39 bench presses on the sideline to help his team pull out a last minute victory.
