Which defensive prospect tops your list?

There's a new Seahawks Draft Blog poll up and ready. To view the current stats or vote yourself check the right hand side bar underneath the 2009 mock draft. As we head towards Christmas and the penultimate week in the NFL regular season we turn our attentions to the defensive side of the ball. Which defensive prospect do you rate the highest?

Feel free to voice your reasons for voting by clicking the comments link below and have your say. Alternatively, why not suggest who else should have been on the list? If you vote other, say who you think should have been up there.

Voting ends on Christmas Day.

I voted Malcom Jenkins. I feel he is safe bet, plus has a decent ceiling. He has good size and speed, plus has played well for years now. He would have been a high pick if he came out last year, but he stayed, which says something good about a player. There are no high ranked defensive tackles, or else that would have been my choice.

It is fun to make our "shoping list" for 2009, but I do not want to pick at 5 or 6. That is a great place to trade down from and collect one or two more picks. Using the point value chart, a first round 5th pick would be worth a first and secound round 12th pick. Likewise, a 6th gets you a first and second round 13th pick.

This gives Seattle 3 picks in the top 45. Much better value than two picks in the top 38.

It's very doubtfull anyone will trade up to as high as 5/6. Currently Buffalo is 12th. While it's possible they will target Orakapo or Currey, both of who will probably be gone by 12th, They can still get a cheaper quality player at 12. Miami is in better position to straight trade up as they have an extra 2nd round pick, but their 1st round pick in too low according to the trade chart.

As with every trade down scenario, it always comes down to finding a willing buyer. We'll look into the prospect of trading down over the coming weeks so keep checking the blog for that. It's hard to forecast a trade at this early stage but it's something we'll cover.

Interesting that Maualuga has the most votes, it seems like LB is one of the few solid positions with good depth the Hawks have.

I'll probably vote Maualuga, and only because this poll doesn't mention Seahawks. Selecting him would be a big blunder, IMO. My initial scouting on him projects him to a 3-4 defense. Most of his missed tackles involve him running sideways, he'll do much better rolling downhill. But, in a 34 he's still the best prospect, IMO.

I disagree that Jenkins is safe. IMO, he has a fairly high ceiling because guys who are good with their jam are rare in the NFL, but I've scouted two OSU games and in both games Jenkins was just plain outrun on multiple deep routes... In the NFL, it will only get worse. One thing I learned from Kelly Herndon is that if you're not able to run deep well, teams will find ways to put their speedsters against you.
