LIVE: NFL Draft (Rounds 2-3)

As with yesterday, we'll have instant analysis on all of the second round picks made today. I'll provide a summary of round three picks. The Seahawks own the 60th overall selection and after that, are not set to pick again until Saturday with two fourth rounders. Will they make a move? It's been speculated that the reason they accumulated picks in rounds 4-7 was to get the ammunition to move up today. This is an immensely talented round two, but there will be a drop off (and potentially a substantial one) in rounds 3-4. Guaranteeing the guy you want today might be wise at the expense of picks later - you could say, quality over quantity.

So what should the Seahawks do? Stay put and see what happens? Trade up with a lot of big name talent on the board? Consider a deal for a current NFL veteran like Marshawn Lynch, as speculated in some quarters (and rejected in others)? Let me know what you think in the comments section and stay tuned to Seahawks Draft Blog for instant live analysis as the picks come in.

Im really hoping for Mays or a quality DL.

WR's can be found in several of the rounds. This draft is deep for DL, so they're available later as well, same with OL and even Safeties. Not of the other safeties offers the freakish athletic ability and the hometown marketability that Taylor Mays brings.

We are going to have a rookie in Sam Bradford, a so far very poor QB in Matt Leinart, and a hopefully soon to be bust/best used in the shotgun QB in Alex Smith throwing to our DB's 6 times each year. That alone makes Earl Thomas a candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He's a FS though, and that means we will have to slide Babineaux over to SS which scares the crap out of me. Every time I think about it, I get flashbacks of a couple years ago... Frank Gore rushing for over 400 yards in 2 games against us with Babineaux missing assignments and tackles all over the place. If we get a player like Taylor Mays (even if we have to trade up for him) he can play in the box, and intimidate the big receivers in our division (Josh Morgan, Michael Crabtree, TE Vernon Davis, Larry Fitzgerald, Early Doucet, and Steve Breaston) . He'll be able to run down almost any running back even from behind. Plus we would have our Safeties covered for the next 10 years. Let's get him and use him like the cardinals use Adrian Wilson, and scare the crap out of people going over the middle.

If we don't get him, I want us to get one of the DE's like Dunlap, Griffen, or one of the DT's like Price or Houston. Let's hope they're willing to move around a bit. Also lets all be thankful this is as deep of a draft as it is, with so many receivers still on the board, two of the big QBs still around, and some OT's still on the board... and lets hope the guys we want fall to us. GO HAWKS!

Let's fix our line. Either OG or DT.

Anonymous, we just signed an OG that was brought in specifically to help teach/prep the LT we drafted in Ben Hamilton (the OG). The other OG in the Lineup is Unger... do you want to get rid of Unger? The only reason to get another OG/C early is if were planning on trading spencer and sliding Unger to C, then wed need one but Gibbs doesn't like to use Guards or Centers until they've had some seasoning on the depth chart. DT however makes sense.

They should stay put. This is a very deep draft.

Your right, we did just bring in a OG, but he is not the future of this Line. In fact, by the way no teams grabbed him before we did just shows that he may not be the fix we are looking for.

I'm not suggesting getting rid of unger, but instead add depth to the most important part of the team. If we can grab a future stud and let him learn under both Gibbs and Hamilton, then I'm fine with letting him sit for a year. This is about drafting for the future and with the past injury problems with the O-line, there is no saying he won't be playing by the end of the year.

#60 should be for a HB: Toby Gerhart, Montario Hardesty, Ben Tate or Dexter McCluster.

But I'd also like to see the Hawks bundle some later picks to move up into the first half of the 2nd if we can do it at an affordable price. The top of this second round will offer several solid 1st-rd talents. (Gotta admit Taylor Mays in the 2nd makes me drool a little.)

Rob Rang is reporting that Kindle has slid because of bad knees (he'll need microfracture surgery after the draft) and USC's Charles Brown has a bad back, causing him to fall into the second. http://rob-rang.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/13682485/21203328?tag=comBlogEntryListCnt;entry21203328

Do you think they could trade two fourth round picks for a second round pick?

Seattle is doing great so far! I would like to see a DT or DE chosen, and some more help in the secondary with some young corners.

I am worried about San Fran now. Two big 325 pound offensive lineman. Youch I can see there strategy is to build the offense.

Matt, there will be OG's and OC's in the later rounds that Alex Gibbs can work with. I'd much rather us get another impact player that can be a starter at his position from day 1 if at all possible.

Two fourths will earn a third, but not a second. Two fourth and the #60 can get you much higher in the second.

I'd love to know why, at the very last minute, Rob Rang changed his pick at #6 from Okung to Jimmy Clausen.

Alex Gibbs was the OLine coach for Denver back when they used to draft 1 or 2 RB's every draft in rounds 4-7 and have them run for 1000 yard seasons and trade them off for picks. I can see us picking up a RB or two, but it will or at least should be in the later rounds.

I'm worried about San Fran for a different reason. They pick ahead of us and need a safety badly. Their current safety Michael Lewis is old, and after getting two good linemen in the first, if they are able to get a strong safety like taylor mays to pair with patrick willis and the rest of their defense. Good Lord.

Matt - this isn't a great draft for interior lineman.

Rob- Could you see us offering either the 60th and branch to move up, or the 60th and a 4th? Would either of those work from a value stand point?

Rob Staton said...

Having a guy like Mays who can be an enforcer and the ball hawk with Thomas would be a prize choice. However, I cant see Mays lasting that long today. We'll see very soon.

I don't think anyone will be interested in Branch. We'd have to give up picks to move Branch in my opinion. A fourth and the #60 won't make much weight. If you want a guy bad enough, you package the two fourths and move up a fair bit. It could happen... quality decreases significantly after round two.

Oops, I forgot to add. I know we've been saying we want to keep Branch and that Carroll likes him, but I also remember Tom Brady saying he wanted the patriots to get Branch again for him, and I don't think that the Patriots would freak out to move down in the 2nd while having 3 2nd round picks to pick up branch and make Brady happy... What do you think?

I would love to see them trade up and take Brian Price. I'd shop the #60 and a 4th rounder to move up and get him. If you pair him and Mebane together to collapse the pocket and flush the QB out, it is going to make our DE's look much better and increase their sack numbers. While it helps to have that dominant pass rusher, a good pass rush can also be achieved by a good unit.

Its too bad we don't have a 3rd this year, because I would be tempted to offer that 3rd and next years 2nd to get up into the 2nd round again. There is so much talent sitting there this year that would be sure 1st rounders in other drafts.

I do not really expect them to pick at #60. I think they will either move up or trade down into the 3rd and pick up another 3rd or 4th.

Isn't Philadelphia looking for a safety as well. Do they select Mays if he falls to them? I know they have an early pick in the 2nd.

I think you'd have to package next year's 2nd and both of this year's 4ths to get a 2nd in this years draft. To trade up, you might need to give a 4th and 5th with #60.

I would love to have an early second round pick! We could get a great defensive end. With the draft depth there may even be one at #60. I really wish we still had our #40 pick. If there was any way to get up into the second round for another pick w/o trading future years picks, I would go for it.

Here is a hot rumor. One of the draft boards I was looking at had Jevan Snead, QB for Mississippi as a late round choice. A project for sure!!! PS. Just say NO to Clausen.
