The week ahead and Monday mocks

By Rob Staton
The week of the draft is finally here. I'll be posting my final two-round mock draft on Wednesday. Kyle and Kip have also agreed to post mocks before Thursday's first round. We'll run through final analysis and thoughts throughout the week. If you have a question or just want to make a point or prediction, please feel free to drop a note into the comments section on any of the articles and we'll do our best to respond. I also want to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who visits this blog and thank you too for the many positive emails and comments. Rest assured it absolutely makes my day and please keep visiting and spreading the word.

Pat Kirwan updates his mock draft for NFL.com and adds a second and third round projection. We've discussed Kirwan's ties to Pete Carroll before and whilst we don't expect the two to share draft secrets openly, Kirwan certainly knows Pete well enough to make a judgement. Like Seahawks Draft Blog, he thinks Eric Berry will be taken 6th overall. There's a surprise at #14, however.

Walter Cherepinsky updates his mock too. He thinks the Seahawks will take Trent Williams with the #6 pick. We certainly understand that the choice will be between Berry and Williams at #6 - a decision made easier if Williams is taken by Washington at #4. Interestingly, Jason Pierre-Paul goes at #14. I've not heard anything to eithe rule out or rule in JPP at this stage.

Rick Gosselin publishes a second mock draft. Gosselin's third projection just before the draft is the one to keep an eye on - it's usually very accurate. He has the Seahawks taking Williams at #6 and Spiller at #14. I don't believe Spiller is an option for Seattle with either first round pick, despite the team's critical need to find some speed and playmaking ability on offense.

I dont really like the idea of Berry at 6. I like him as a player but with the Seahawks needing soooo many spots I think he is too much of a luxury. I Would much rather trade with the eagles(who I heard they have had berry in for 3 visits.) Say we trade the 6th for the 24th, their 2nd 2nd rounder and their 1st next year.
I would then take a tackle at 14 and then mays at 24. Plus I want that pick for Locker...I believe in him that much(and I think Pete does too)

The more I look at it, I think the Hawks are gonna have a hard time dealing out of the #6 pick. I think KC is goning to be just as motivated to move the #5 to a team that wants Berry. They'd take the same package the Hawks would, so why wouldn't the Eagles for example, just move up to #5 and ensure getting Berry.

Everyone has us linked to Berry and Williams so far, but I don't see either of them being availible. If Williams is the best fit in the draft at LT for the hawks, wouldn't that make him the best fit for the Skins as well? I think he goes 4th. I think Berry will end up going to a team that trades up at #5 or he's a Hawk at #6. The real interesting scenario will be if they are in fact both gone. Where will the Hawks go from there?

In all honesty I don't think KC will find any takers and Seattle won't move down. I think there will be very little trade activity in the top nine but between 10-25 potentially quite a bit of movement.

Just for fun Rob if Williams and Berry are gone (DT's & Bradford also) what direction would the they go?

Derrick Morgan is a strong possibility, so is one of the other offensive tackles. Clausen and Spiller not on the radar though from what I've been told.

The Seahawks would be pretty unlucky if Berry, Williams, McCoy, and Suh are all gone. Not that I think it will happen because I've been hearing Bulaga and KC, but if it does happen, I might just throw a dice at Derrick Morgan (he's top 10 talent in most drafts). However, according to the latest rumor, they would take Jimmy Clausen if the scenario mentioned above happens.

The second well sourced rumor (according to the 1st one, they're different) said Clausen is the 3rd option if Williams and Berry are gone.

I think Hawks go Berry with #6 and D. Morgan at #14. Pete is a Defensive minded coach and we have the opportunity to build this D into a force! Remember the old days when we had a tough minded D?! Curry, Lofa, Morgan, Berry, Hawthorne, Trufant, etc. Berry = premium player / talent. Morgan = premium talent. Curry was premium player / talent. The more we can build around these types of players the better our team will be. Go get these two guys!!

Address the OL in the 2nd. RB's and WR's can be found later in the draft.

I've not personally had contact with this 'second' source. The information I've received personally says Clausen isn't an option. In the event that Seattle's top four are gone (Suh, McCoy, Williams and Berry) I still think Derrick Morgan will be the pick.

Scott - I'll be surprised if Morgan makes it to #14.

I don't think Morgan makes it to 14 either. But what about Pierre-Paul at 14? I think that's a strong possibility. We only had 28 sacks last year, PC has been fairly open about that being an area of need and we lost 3 DEs this off-season.

I personally prefer JPPs high ceiling to Morgans high floor (Ruskell).

Do you see Carrol taking advantage of this years draft's strength (defense)? I think our defense would be something else if we got Berry at #6 and then either Morgan or Pierre- Paul at #14. Then maybe even someone like Lamar Houston at #60. We would have young play makers at each level of our defense.

I can't help but think if we grab Berry at #6 (My personal choice) then at #14 we'll grab Charles Brown. Or, try to trade down. If we grab Williams, I think #14 will be either Derrick Morgan, Earl Thomas, or...??? In the second round, I'm really, really hoping for either Jahvid Best or Mardy Gilyard. Gilyard actually seems a lot more logical, he fills a big need for a speedy WR and more importantly, a threat in the return game.

The Seahawks managed to suck the excitement out of the draft for me last year, and they're doing it again this year. I suppose I'd take Berry if the choice were between Berry/Trent, but I'd much rather trade down (at all costs). If Philly were willing to offer even just their 3rd round pick, I'd rather have that and get say Dez Bryant/Charles Brown/Saffold at #24 and Tony Washington/Lamarr Houston/Chad/Reshad Jones in the 3rd at a much lower cost than Eric Berry at $40 million.

I really hate paying #6 money for a safety. I really hope they go OT at #6 and Spiller or a DT/DE at #14...ideally trading out of that spot.

Matthew - I love JPP's upside and I imagine a lot of other teams do too. However, a lot of those same teams will be very wary of how he'll adapt to moving a long way from home, earning a lot of money and being able to produce for ten years rather than a handful of games. Do Seattle roll that dice? I wouldn't rule it out, but I think it's unlikely.

Annonymous - Seattle will spend at least one of their first two picks on defense, but I'll be surprised if it's two first round picks.

Patrick - unless the Seahawks trade out of the #14 pick I think it's very likely that Charles Brown is a big contender.

CLanterman - I know there's a lot of talk sparked by Peter King about Philly targetting a safety. However, Seahawks fans can forget about the Eagles taking the #6 pick. It won't happen. The furthest they'll trade up is Jacksonville which should guarantee Earl Thomas at a much lower cost than Seattle will look for. The Jags just want to move down.

The second source is also on seahawks net and Kip showed it in one of the previous comment sections.

Annonymous - I've seen the second source but haven't contacted that person unlike the original source. I'm led to believe that Clausen is just not an option, likewise Spiller and Iupati.
